Absolutely charming & rare porcelain bisque figure of a small baby boy acting as a shoeshiner, complete with scrub brush in his right hand, getting ready to shine the big beautiful clog shoe he has placed upon his bench; gorgeous applied rose & leafs cover the front of the shoe, exquisitely modelled throughout & wonderfully handpainted, no identifying marks except for an incised number 4
and the letter M
on bottom of shoe, but undoubtedly German in origin, circa late 1800s, Big Size at 7.0" long x 6.25" high x 3.0" wide, excellent vintage condition with just a flat chip off the inside rim of the front of the boy's hat and a few tiny slivers off the applied floral decoration, as well there is a bit of sediment buildup or paint on a corner of the base, all of which is mentioned for accuracy only because none of this detracts from the lovely overall display ~ great item to add to a shoe collection! Same figure, except in a smaller size, can be seen on page 95 of Porcelain and Pottery Shoes
(copy of picture included in sale).
